Food & Exchange
Food & Exchange
Our Chicago, a boom town owing early success to the extraction of food from the countryside and later to the abstraction of food on the Market, remains a city in which food, specifically how we procure food, gives shape to our communities. We frequent bodegas & delis, break bread in school cafeterias & in parks, and open our homes to neighborly dinners.

Food & Sense
Our experience of food is a flood of local and environmental sensations. From the closeness of mouth feel and smell, to the intensity of lighting and our choice of dining companions, or deeper still into our associations of memory with the sounds or colors of a particularly bad dinner date. Even our choice of food may conspire to alter our ability to sense.

And we're back...
Join us January 10th at 8 pm as we welcome a new year and the renewal of The Seasonal Salon. While we reflected upon the 20 Salons and 75+ speakers that we have hosted from our home on Palmer Square, many of you asked, What happened to the salon? Well… We’re back from our Summer/Fall sabbatical with a variation on an old theme. The Seasonal Salon will continue to be a place...

Seasonal Sabbatical
Hello Friends, Two things to you all. First, as of last Monday I am taking a sabbatical from the Seasonal Salon for the entirety of Spring and into Summer. After nearly two years and 70 storytellers, it is time to re-acclimate myself with the goals of and the community about the Seasonal Salon. One of the organizational shifts to occur this Spring that I’m sure you will appreciate is the...

Excerpts from the Resolutions Salon:
I will not over commit.
I will be more methodical.
I will folkdance with Mom.
I will not eat cereal straight form the box.
I will make a sketch each day.
I will learn more.
I will see more live music.
I will shower with people I love.
I will learn to do my job better.
I will spend more time in a bathrob.
I will stop being academic, and start doing.

Caitlyn Galloway
I like to think that Caitlyn flew in from San Francisco to share her work with the Salon. I met Caitlyn in the backyard where she keeps her garden in the Mission. She works with a sign shop in SF that produces all their work by hand. In a world of digital prodcution and vinyl letters, her work shows where each line starts and stops.

I work on human (and animal) motor control, that is, how the brain controls our motions. it is somewhere between robotics and neuroscience (and my work has moved back and forth between those two fields). Right now i don’t see a connection between my work and communication, other than the vague notion that we communicate with our bodies. However, yes, i do have some peeves...
